TE’s HLR Series LVDT products were previously certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) as being intrinsically safe for use in classified locations Division 1 and 2, Gas Groups A through D. TE recently discovered that TE HLR Series LVDT products do not meet the testing criteria in certain Divisions and Gas Groups. As a result, UL recently retested the HLR Series LVDT products, and, for such products in service, UL’s findings are as follows:
- Units in unclassified locations are safe for continued use.
- Units in Division 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations are safe for continued use regardless of Gas Group.
- Units in Division 1 Hazardous (Classified) Locations: No units are rated intrinsically safe for use in Gas Groups A or B and should be removed from service immediately.
- All units are rated intrinsically safe for Gas Groups C and D, except models 4000 and 7500 which are rated intrinsically safe for Gas Group D only, if they were initially installed following the installation drawing instructions. Any model HLR-750-4000 or HLR-750-7500 in use in Gas Group C are not rated intrinsically safe and should be removed from service immediately.
Additional detail on classifications can be found at: https://www.ul.com/resources/ul-and-c-ul-hazardous-areas-certification-north-america
For products used in Division 1 Hazardous (Classified) Locations that UL has determined in its retesting to not be intrinsically safe when used in certain gases, TE does not have replacement products that meet the testing criteria.
Please further note that TE will be working with the applicable European notified body to determine impact under the ATEX directive.
